Ultralow birefringence vacuum cell

Fig. 1: Twelve-sided vacuum cell with ultralow birefringence. A large-NA objective is installed in its interior.

Optical access to the ultra-high vacuum environment is an essential requirement for atom manipulation experiments and is typically realised by glass cells. Our transport scheme is based on polarisation additionally requiring additionally a low stress induced birefringence which is not fulfilled by usual cells. Therefore, we developed a dodecagonal (12-sided) glass cell made of SF-57 glass from Schott®.

It features:

  • polarization extinction < 1:107
    (patent pending)
  • double-sided anti-reflective coating
  • large optical access (12 sides)
  • double-sided anti-reflective coating
  • pressure <1x10-10 mbar
  • compact geometry
(height 150 mm, inner diam. 40mm, outer diam. 68mm)
